Chicopee schools renewed school choice at 46 seats despite declining enrollment.
School Committee · Meeting of April 15, 2026
Chicopee schools renewed school choice at 46 seats despite declining enrollment. The School Committee voted 11-0 Wednesday to continue the program for 2026-2027, offering seats only in grades one through five after Deputy Superintendent for Academics Jennifer Belleville reported in-district school choice enrollment fell from 84 students to 74. Committee member Grace Schofield pressed officials over funding a new Early Childhood Community Partnership Liaison position, grant-funded through the Commonwealth Preschool Partnership Initiative, calling it "concerning" given the district's looming fiscal cliff; the job was approved 11-0.
Members also approved two bills warrants totaling $1,820,639.51, a settlement with the custodial union, and accepted a $100,000, five-year donation pledge from the Pilot Company travel center. Three staffers, including longtime custodian Candido Lopes, were honored on retirement.
