School Committee · Meeting of July 28, 2026

Chicopee resident tells School Committee teacher departures nearly doubled since 2023. Rebecca Wark cited district data showing teaching positions grew from 587 to 644 between 2023 and 2026 while retention fell from 87.6 percent to 84.8 percent, pushing annual departures from roughly 73 to about 98, and said "this now falls to you, our elected oversight body." No committee member responded on the record. Separately, the board approved $6,073,690 across five warrants, including $5,000 for new American flags after an American Legion complaint, and a 2026 employee handbook, 10-0.

Members also authorized Fairview Elementary to accept a $15,000 Stop & Shop donation for its Nourish and Flourish food program, which now serves about 40 families weekly, and surprised remote member Deanna Russo, who is pregnant, with a gift table before entering executive session on union negotiations.
