City Council appropriates $2.35 million for new school administration building

CHICOPEE — City Council votes unanimously on $2.35 million school building purchase. The Chicopee City Council appropriated $2.35 million from unexpended library renovation funds to purchase a downtown building at 219 and 225 Exchange Street for the School Department's administrative offices, closing July 10. The purchase will eliminate the department's $285,000 annual rent, according to the minutes.
Councilor Shane D. Brooks noted the property is on a bus route and more accessible to parents and students. The council also unanimously approved additional appropriations of $2 million for the Stabilization Trust Fund and $31,617.80 for school summer programs, the latter the final year of cell tower revenue.
The council accepted a $7,800 state grant for police bulletproof vests and endorsed the Chicopee Safe Streets 4 All Safety Action Plan.
