Chicopee City Council pushes back on state road-funding shortfall

CHICOPEE — City Council votes to press state on insufficient road funding. The Chicopee City Council passed a resolution 10 to 3 calling on Massachusetts to increase Chapter 90 allocations and modernize the funding formula to better reflect aging infrastructure and rising construction costs. Council President Frank N.
Laflamme, Councilor Samuel Robert Shumsky, and Councilor Joseph F. Pasternak III sponsored the measure, noting the city receives only $1.3 million to $1.4 million annually against estimated costs of $4 million for major projects like Murphy Lane reconstruction. Councilors Jessica L.
Avery, Abigail Arriaga, and Shane D. Brooks dissented. The council also approved $915,140.02 in emergency appropriations for winter weather damage and accepted $250,290 in state grants for water-department mapping and fire-department equipment.
